Though it is the rarest of occurrences, among certain Midlander family lines in Gridania, children are known to be born with curious horns atop their head. Called the Padjal, they are tasked with serving as mediators between the elementals and those who would call the forest home. To that end, they are separated from their families and placed in the ward of the Conjurers’ Guild for tutelage. A Padjali girl twelve years of age, Gatty lives in the East End with her mother Sanche, who chose to go into hiding rather than relinquish her daughter as tradition would dictate. Unfortunately, the girl grew increasingly unable to control the powerful magic welling up from within her, causing mother and child alike no end of suffering.
