Experience Points, or exp EXP, are a system that drives the advancement of players in the game. All Disciples of War, Magic, the Hand, and the Land receive EXP for a wide variety of activities. Upon reaching a certain threshold, players advance by one level. Upon reaching level 100 in a class (or in the case of Blue Mage, level 80), players will no longer earn further EXP from any activities. Various ways to boost EXP gain are also available to players, as well as several one-time sources of EXP.

Experience is the point system that drives the advancement of many aspects of the game, including but not limited to:
Sources of EXP
# Leveling of combat classes (Disciples of War and Disciples of Magic)
Disciples of War and Magic
# Leveling of crafting/gathering classes (Disciples of the Hand and Disciples of the Land)
# Leveling of combat companions (specifically the Combat Chocobo ((Not covered in this guide currently)))

There are many ways in which to earn experience, including but not limited to:
Disciples of War and Magic earn their EXP primarily through combat activity, such as defeating enemies, participating in FATEs, and completing dungeons. The following is a non-exhaustive list in no particular order of activities that grant EXP to Disciples of War and Magic:

* Killing Monsters/Bosses
* Defeating Enemies
* Completing Leves
** Note: as of Patch 6.0, regular enemies inside dungeons no longer grant EXP. Instead, the equivalent EXP is granted upon defeating the bosses.
* Completing Duty Roulettes once daily for the bonus.
* Participating in FATEs
* Participating in FATEs
* Completing Side Quests, Class Quests, and Main Storyline quests
* Participating in PvP
* Completing Challenge Logs
** This includes Crystalline Conflict, Frontline, and Rival Wings, but excludes Custom Matches.

* Completing Sightseeing Log entries, once per character
* Completing Deep Dungeons
* Participating in Field Operations in Bozja.
* Completing Battlecraft Levequests
* Completing Guildhests
** Most classes also earn a one-time EXP bonus when completing a Guildhest for the first time, with the exception of jobs introduced with Shadowbringers and later.

In addition to all of this, there are various ways in which you can boost the amount of experience you get from any of these particular activities!  These come in many forms, specifically:
Disciples of the Hand and the Land
* Food buffs (Obtained from eating food items)
Disciples of the Hand and the Land earn their EXP through crafting and gathering activities respectively. The following is a non-exhaustive list in no particular order of activities that grant EXP to Disciples of the Hand and the Land:
* Buffs from your Free Company (Obtained by having "Buff Actions" activated by high-ranking guild members)
* Wearing the Friendship Circlet (Obtained by recruiting a friend, or being recruited by a friend - and subscribing for at least 30 days)
* Rested EXP (Obtained over time by resting or logging out in 'Sanctuary' areas ((places with Aetheryte Shards)))
* Armory Bonus (All combat classes lower-level than your highest level combat class will have a +100% EXP buff towards applicable activities until level 50, where it decreases to +50%)

Below are tables that denote the breakdown and application of the various EXP buffs to EXP-gaining activities in the game:

Armory Bonus
Bonuses to EXP
The Armory Bonus is additional experience granted to any combat class you have that is NOT your highest level class. From levels 1-49, you receive +100% additional experience for secondary classes that are lower level than your highest level character.  At level 50, this bonus decreases to only 50%.
Quite a number of bonuses can be applied to increase EXP earned. Most of these bonuses stack additively with one another, unless otherwise noted in the sections below.

The bonus applies to kills, FATEs and leves.  The amount of experience granted has nothing to do with the distance in levels from your highest class.
Meals
Additionally, the +10% experience from The Heat of Battle II (FC buff) - will stack on top of this buff to provide an additional 10% experience. So the Armory bonus is 110% (armory) + 10% (fc buff) instead of just 100%, while the FC buff is active. This is different from the other bonuses, as they do not receive additional experience from the FC buff.
Meals can be consumed to gain well fed Well Fed, which grants +3% bonus to EXP for 30 minutes in addition to the meal's specific effects. The duration can be extended to 60 minutes by consuming multiple servings of the same food. Only one meal bonus can be active at a time. This bonus applies to EXP gained from defeating enemies, synthesizing recipes, and gathering items.

The Armory Bonus, as previously mentioned - does not apply to non-combat classes such as gatherers & crafters.
Certain meals from special events will grant a +4% bonus to EXP instead. For example: Fat Choco Choco.

Examples:
Other Consumables
* Your highest level combat class is 20.  You are playing as that class. You receive no armory bonus.
{| item align-left
* Your highest level combat class is 20.  You are playing as a second combat class that is less than level 20.  You are now receiving armory bonus exp.
* Your highest level combat class is 20.  You are playing a second combat class that is also level 20.  You receive no armory bonus.

Armoury Bonus
Rested Experience
The Armoury Bonus is a bonus applied to EXP gained by combat classes when below the level of your highest class. The bonus is +100% for levels 1-89, reducing to +50% for levels 90-100. Despite what the in-game Active Help entry implies, this bonus does not otherwise change depending on the discrepancy between levels. This bonus only applies to defeating enemies and FATE rewards. Other sources of experience, such as completing Duty Roulettes, are not affected.

Rested EXP is obtained by resting or logging out in a Sanctuary.  A sanctuary is any Aetheryte you can attune, as such Sanctuaries include; City-States (Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, Ul'Dah, any Aetheryte you can teleport to is also a town that is considered a Sanctuary).
Notably, the buffs "The Heat of Battle" and "Squadron Battle Manual" are multiplicative with the Armoury Bonus, on top of its normal additive effects. For instance, a class with the Armoury Bonus and The Heat of Battle II (10%) will earn 120% experience: 100% from the Armoury Bonus, 10% from The Heat of Battle II acting multiplicatively (as 10% of 100% is 10%), and 10% from The Heat of Battle II acting additively.

Heres what we know about Rested EXP:
Rested EXP
* It increases EXP gain by 50% for applicable activities.
* It can charge up to 1.5 full level bars. Reference
* All activities which benefit from Rested EXP will consume from the same bar
* It takes 4 days to gain the full 1.5 level bars.
* The % of the bar consumed remains the same regardless of level.
**Example: If you have a level 45 Dragoon, and you eat 2 bars worth of level EXP to get up to level 47, and then switch to a level 10 Gladiator, you will still only have 1 bar remaining that will be consumed if you level that Gladiator to level 11.
* If you queue into an instanced dungeon/guildhest while being in a Sanctuary, you will still accrue rested EXP as if you were in that sanctuary.  This means that if you have run out of rested EXP but are still in a Sanctuary, you will occasionally still get a rested EXP bonus whenever an amount "tics" into your rested exp bank.
* Rumor: You may grow rested EXP faster if you are in a Sanctuary as a lower-level class than your highest?  (Example:  Lvl 50 DRG main logs out as a lvl 1 ROG).  Testimony needed.

Challenge Logs & Hunting Logs
Rested EXP is gained by resting or logging out in areas designated as sanctuaries. Sanctuaries are typically areas around an Aetheryte as well as City-States, such as Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul'dah. Sanctuary status is indicated by a crescent moon symbol to the right of the experience bar. Rested EXP provides a 50% bonus to EXP gained from defeating enemies, synthesizing recipes, and gathering items. Because of this, rested EXP is consumed as a percentage of the bar, rather than a flat amount.
Challenge Log
Challenge Logs are "weekly" and reset every Tuesday. These logs provide huge chunks of EXP for players who complete their objectives. You will receive a warning of when you are about to "complete" an objective, in case you want to switch to a different class and have them receive the reward.

Hunting Logs do not reset. They provide 1-time bonuses for completing their objectives, with a 1-time mega-bonus for completing an entire section of the logbook. Currently Hunting Logs are only for levels 1-50.  There are no logs for 51-60.
The current rested bonus is displayed on top of the experience bar. The dark orange portion indicates how much EXP can be earned before the bonus fades. If the bar is blue, it indicates that the bonus will carry over to the next level. It takes 7 days to gain a full bar of rested EXP, at which point no more will be accrued.

Neither of the Logs benefit from any additional sources of EXP buffs.

Daily Roulettes
Free Company Actions
Duty Roulette
Roulettes are the largest singular sources of EXP in the game.  Participating in a Low-Level Daily Roulette will grant anywhere from 50-90% of a level upon completion (killing the final boss of the random dungeon) while under level 50.  This is in addition to the experience obtained from killing the mobs/bosses in these dungeons, and in addition to completing Challenge Logs (which are easier to do in roulettes).  The 50-90% range is based on the difference between your current level and the level of the dungeon.  If you have been scaled down to a very low-level, you will receive a higher bonus.  If you are the same-level or similar to the dungeon you'll receive less of a bonus.  This can be done once per day and resets at 8AM PST/PDT.

High-level Roulettes do not reward any experience for monster/boss kills - but will still grant a chunk of bonus EXP upon completion of the dungeon. You can receive this bonus EXP once per day.
Free Company Actions are buffs granted by a Free Company to its members for 24 hours, some of which can increase EXP gained. Up to two Free Company Actions can be active at any one time.

Additionally, you may queue for Guildhest Roulettes. These are small "trials" which test basic dungeoneering skills. Upon completion of a Guildhest Roulette, you will receive a large chunk of EXP (not as large as LLDR since it is not as extensive or time consuming). This is about 10-18% of a level. This can be done once per day and resets at 8AM PST/PDT. Further, each time you complete a type of Guildhest for the first time (per class) you will receive additional bonus EXP (one time per class per roulette only).

How do I maximize my EXP?
The Road to 90
Some Worlds with lower populations are occasionally designated as Preferred Worlds. This designation gives characters newly created on those worlds a passive buff called the road to 90 The Road to 90, which applies to any class below level 90. The buff provides a multiplicative 100% bonus to all sources of EXP, calculated after applying any other bonuses. For more information about Preferred Worlds, please refer to the Play Guide entry on population balancing. The buff was during the first day of early access for Stormblood (patch 4.0) as The Road to 60.

For all 3 roles the optimal method of power-leveling yourself is the same.  The difference comes specifically in the queue-times to step 1 & 2.  Tanks and Healers have near-instant queues during normal hours, and may not even have time to do Steps 4 & 5.  DPS on the other hand, will spend a lot of time in the queue and will benefit heavily from participating in Steps 4 & 5 in the meantime.

|-
NOTES:
! scope="row" |  3
* Doing dungeons that are the same level as your character are a good way to get Combo Kill bonus EXP. If you are the same level as a dungeon, consider queueing normally (non-roulette) until you are a higher level then the dungeon, and then doing the roulette - in order to maximize that bonus.
| 450|| 750
* Due to the fact that the Hunting Log receives no benefit from the Armory bonus (+100% EXP) - it is no longer a strong source of EXP. You should however still complete it if you intend to get a relic weapon.

Disambig icon.png This article is about normal PvE EXP. For points PvP earned in PvP to increase PvP rank, see PvP EXP. For points Eureka earned in Eureka to increase Elemental level, see Elemental EXP.

Experience Points, or Experience EXP, are a system that drives the advancement of players in the game.

Sources of EXP

Disciples of War and Magic

Disciples of War and Magic earn their EXP primarily through combat activity, such as defeating enemies, participating in FATEs, and completing dungeons. The following is a non-exhaustive list in no particular order of activities that grant EXP to Disciples of War and Magic:

Disciples of the Hand and the Land

Disciples of the Hand and the Land earn their EXP through crafting and gathering activities respectively. The following is a non-exhaustive list in no particular order of activities that grant EXP to Disciples of the Hand and the Land:

Bonuses to EXP

Quite a number of bonuses can be applied to increase EXP earned. Most of these bonuses stack additively with one another, unless otherwise noted in the sections below.

Meals

Meals can be consumed to gain Well Fed icon1.png Well Fed, which grants +3% bonus to EXP for 30 minutes in addition to the meal's specific effects. The duration can be extended to 60 minutes by consuming multiple servings of the same food. Only one meal bonus can be active at a time. This bonus applies to EXP gained from defeating enemies, synthesizing recipes, and gathering items.

Certain meals from special events will grant a +4% bonus to EXP instead. For example: Fat choco choco icon1.png  Fat Choco Choco.

Armoury Bonus

The Armoury Bonus is a bonus applied to EXP gained by combat classes when below the level of your highest class. The bonus is +100% for levels 1-89, reducing to +50% for levels 90-100. Despite what the in-game Active Help entry implies, this bonus does not otherwise change depending on the discrepancy between levels. This bonus only applies to defeating enemies and FATE rewards. Other sources of experience, such as completing Duty Roulettes, are not affected.

Notably, the buffs The heat of battle1.png "The Heat of Battle" and "Squadron Battle Manual" are multiplicative with the Armoury Bonus, on top of its normal additive effects.

Rested EXP

Rested EXP is gained by resting or logging out in areas designated as sanctuaries. Sanctuaries are typically areas around an Aetheryte as well as City-States, such as Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul'dah. Sanctuary status is indicated by a crescent moon symbol to the right of the experience bar. Rested EXP provides a 50% bonus to EXP gained from defeating enemies, synthesizing recipes, and gathering items. Because of this, rested EXP is consumed as a percentage of the bar, rather than a flat amount.

Free Company Actions

Free Company Actions are buffs granted by a Free Company to its members for 24 hours, some of which can increase EXP gained. Up to two Free Company Actions can be active at any one time.

Action Icon Description
The Heat of Battle The heat of battle1.png Increases EXP earned through battle by 5%.

The Road to 90

Some Worlds with lower populations are occasionally designated as Preferred Worlds. This designation gives characters newly created on those worlds a passive buff called The Road to icon1.png The Road to 90, which applies to any class below level 90.

EXP Bonus icon1.png EXP Bonus

When a Mentor status icon1.pngMentor forms a party with a New adventurer status icon1.png New Adventurer or Returner status icon1.png Returner, they both receive a bonus to experience points earned from adventuring activities. This experience point bonus applies until level 90.

Bonuses to experience points earned will apply to the following:

Both mentors and new adventurers must be in the same area to receive the experience point bonus. The experience point bonus will not apply when suffering an experience point penalty due to discrepancies in level or when using the Unrestricted Party feature.

Required EXP by Level
