Main Scenario Quests (MSQ) are quests that tell the main story of Final Fantasy XIV. These quests often have cutscenes and voice acting, and also unlock important features of the game: airship travel, Grand Company access, a personal chocobo mount, new cities, overworld zones, as well as dungeons and trials.
Initially, the Main Scenario Quests differ depending on the player's starting city (Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, or Ul'dah) which is determined by the class chosen during character creation. These stories converge at the quest It's Probably Pirates, and remain the same from that point onward.
At the beginning of each expansion, the Main Scenario Quests will briefly diverge into two short quest chains that will introduce the player to different characters and locations in the expansion, but will converge after completing each chain.
Players may replay Main Scenario Quests using New Game+, which will gradually unlock MSQ segments with sufficient progression through the story.
Overall, the MSQ is a linear quest chain consisting of hundreds of hours of story content (852 or 853 quests on a single character). Players may skip directly to the MSQ at the start of any expansion by purchasing a "Tales of Adventure" skip from the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store using real money ($25 USD). As the story is one of the main focuses of the game, this is generally not recommended for first-time playthroughs, unless one is primarily interested in leveling a new character as quickly as possible to participate in endgame content.

All MSQs up to the end of the Post-Stormblood Quests are accessible on the Free Trial or with the base game. However, subsequent MSQs require ownership of an expansion (Endwalker, which also includes all Shadowbringers content).
The icon for Main Scenario Quests is meant to resemble Dalamud as it fell during the 1.x version.
