“"A knight lives to serve—to aid those in need."
Haurchefant Greystone is the bastard son of Count Edmont de Fortemps, born as a result of the count's sole indiscretion. He was raised together with Lord Edmont's trueborn sons—an arrangement to which his wife strongly objected, forcing the count to ultimately deny Haurchefant the family name. In keeping with tradition, he was given the surname "Greystone," like so many other illegitimate sons and daughters who have been cast by the wayside as pebbles.
Despite his status, Haurchefant dreamed of becoming a knight, and he learned much of the chivalric ways from his father while pursuing his private studies of swordplay. He achieved this ambition when, in his seventeenth year, he helped rescue Lord Francel, the fourth-born son of House Haillenarte, who had been kidnapped by bandits, and was granted a knighthood for his deed. He has since seen eleven years of faithful service.
After eleven years of faithful service to House Fortemps, he gave his life in defense of a friend.

Lore
Born as the illegitimate child to Edmont de Fortemps. Though he was permitted to live and grow up in the house, he was not close to his father or stepmother, and did not enjoy the same respect as his half-brothers. As he grew, he desired a chance to change his fate, and was soon given one. He came across Francel de Haillenarte beset by bandits who were attempting to kidnap the noble. He fended off the kidnappers with nothing but a knife, blocking any incoming attacks, including an arrow, with his bare arm. He was bequeathed knighthood for his valorous deed, and dedicated his life to living up to his title.
Haurchefant first met the Warrior of Light in Coerthas when they come looking for the Enterprise, Cid nan Garlond's Airship. Haurchefant agreed to help them search for the vessel, but only if they helped him disprove the charges of heresy levied against Francel and House Haillenarte. While the Warrior of Light gathers clues and evidence and eventually proves the young lord's innocence, Haurchefant discovered the location of the ship, the Stone Vigil. The Warrior of Light, Cid and Alphinaud Leveilleur reach the airship, taking out the dragon guarding it.
Later, when a shipment to Revenant's Toll is attacked by heretics, Haurchefant explains the rising attacks of heretics at the behest of Lady Iceheart. He implores the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and the Warrior of Light to investigate the heretics' actions within Eorzea. He also introduced them to Aymeric de Borel, who ensured continuous supplies would come to Mor Dhona in exchange for watching over the Keeper of the Lake.
Following the coup at the banquet where the Warrior of Light and the Scions were falsely accused of regicide, Haurchefant brought the Warrior of Light, Alphinaud and Tataru to House Fortemps where they were offered asylum and made wards of the house and allowing them entry into Ishgard proper.
When Emmanellain de Fortemps was kidnapped by the Vanu Vanu, Haurchefant fought alongside the Warrior of Light to rescue his brother, charging the fortress and bringing his brother home. Upon returning to the city however, he found it under attack by heretics. When Lady Iceheart commanded the heretics to stand down, he allowed her and her people to walk out of the city unimpeded.
Following the revelation that the Dragonsong War had been started by the original King Thordan and Aymeric left to The Vault, Haurchefant led the charge to free him, rescuing him from the dungeons while the Warrior of Light ascended to the top of The Vault to stop Archbishop Thordan VII from escaping. When one of the Heavens' Ward fired a Spear of the Fury at the Warrior of Light, he lept in front of it, using his shield to guard against it. Unfortunately, the Spear was too strong, and broke through the shield, impaling him. As he lay dying, he thanked the Warrior of Light, and told them not to look so upset, as "a smile better suits a hero". He smiled one last time, and passed away.
Upon returning to Fortemps Manor, his father praised him for dying in a valorous way, as befitting a knight, and asked to be alone. Unable to handle the grief, he collapsed. Later, he would gift the Warrior of Light with the shield Haurchefant used to save their life. Haurchefant was laid to rest overlooking all of Ishgard. Later, Emmanellain took over his position as commander and hung a massive painting on the wall of his brother.
When rescuing Estinien Wyrmblood from the clutches of the Shade of Nidhogg, Haurchefant's spirit appeared and aided in the removal of the eyes. When Estinien was saved, he smiled and faded away. He would also later aid the Warrior of Light and the Scions in The Aitiascope by using his Aether to greatly empower his allies in order to overcome their enemies.
