“"The Gold Saucer and all its wonders await you, friend—pray enjoy them to your heart's content."
While the name Manderville may be emblazoned across the walls and surface of the Gold Saucer, it is Roland Redsteele who can most often be seen hustling to and fro across its glittering floors, keeping the many cogs of its operation turning smoothly—particularly as far as chocobo racing is concerned. However, this forty-eight-year-old was not always such an exemplar of industriousness: stricken by poverty, he followed a desperate and dishonest path for much of his youth. It was during this troubled time that he fell upon Godbert Manderville with an appetite to take every coin he was worth—a mistake, for instead of leaving the encounter with a heavier purse, Roland found himself battered and bruised by his would-be victim. It was this chance meeting that compelled him to change his ways, and filled him with a devotion to Godbert so strong as to inspire him to imitate the elder Manderville's hairstyle. (To what degree of success is a matter of some debate.)
