The big trick for that one in particular is that you don't nuke him immediately after he uses it. When he uses it, it gives him a buff that changes his next cast - it's after he consumes the buff that you need to nuke him. That said, since it's a non-required spell, if you're unsyncing it you only have a small chance for it to "drop".
