Types of Materia
- Main article: Materia
Materia are aetherically charged stones of various sizes and colours that players can slot into their equipment to provide themselves with additional stat-boosts.
The size and colour of materia you find typically indicated how much power (and of what stat-type) each piece of materia provides. For example, lower-level materia is often depicted as smaller or more jagged compared to higher-level materia, whereas higher-level materia is often larger and more rounded.
Colour-wise: Red, Purple and Yellow materia is used to depict combat based stats that are desired by Disciples of War and Disciples of Magic, whereas Blue and Green materia are suitable for Disciples of the Hand (crafters) and Disciples of the Land (gatherers) respectively.
Materia Types
There are several categories of materia, some of which were discontinued over the course of the game's development.
- (Active) Combat Materia - desired by Disciples of War and Disciples of Magic to improve combat stats such as Direct Hit Rate, Critical Hit, Determination, Skill Speed, and Spell Speed. All forms of generic combat-based materia are red in colour and are used by both Disciples of War & Magic. Purple based materia, such as Skill Speed and Spell Speed, are used to effect the global cooldown, damage-over-time, and healing-over-time effects. Yellow represents a more role-centric materia that is used to improve Tenacity (a tanking statistic) and Piety (a healing statistic).
- (Active) Crafting Materia - sought by Disciples of the Hand to improve stats such as Craftsmanship, Control, and Crafting Points (CP). All forms of crafting-based materia are blue in colour.
- (Active) Gathering Materia - sought by Disciples of the Land to improve stats such as Perception, Gathering, and Gathering Points (GP). All forms of gathering-based materia are green in colour.
- (Discontinued) Resistance Materia - was once used to increase the players resistance to certain elements and ailments, such as Fire Resistance, Lightning Resistance, Water Resistance, Ice Resistance, Earth Resistance, and Wind Resistance. Retired in Patch 4.2 during Stormblood
- (Discontinued) Attribute Materia - was once used to increase players core stats, such as Strength, Vitality, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Mind. Retired in Patch 5.0 with the launch of Shadowbringers
Note: The item level of a piece of equipment is different from its required level, and all forms of Materia VI, VIII, & X cannot be melded onto a piece of equipment beyond the first advanced materia melding slot.
Note 2: Melding materia once required a carbonized matter catalyst. This requirement was removed in patch 4.06.

Discontinued / Inactive Materia
Below is a list of all materia that has been rendered inactive over the course of the game. While they no longer provide any benefit, any discontinued materia that still exists in-game can be vendored or traded amongst players until they inevitably disappear altogether. The two waves of materia discontinuation were in Patch 4.2 (all elemental and status effect resist) and Patch 5.0 (main stat). All materia of this type now comes with a generic description to indicate their lack of power:
- "A crystal that was once believed to be capable of enhancing a piece of equipment's [X] attribute."
