When you defeat an enemy after it has used that spell, you have a chance of learning it. Doing instances either premade with no Unrestricted options selected or with both Unrestricted and Level Sync options make the spell a 100% learn rate. Spell chances in the open world or {{questlink|maskedcarnivale|Masked Carnivale}} are RNG based on the number of stars for that spell.


If you die before the enemy does you will not learn the spell. You must be alive as it dies in order to learn the spell. Dying from the enemy using {{action icon|Self-destruct}} or {{action icon|Final Sting}} will result in failure to learn the spell.

When you defeat an enemy after it has used a spell, you have a chance of learning that spell. Specifically, learning a spell has the following requirements:

  • You must "tag" the enemy before it dies. - This means hitting the enemy or casting a debuff on it. If fighting enemies of a significantly-lower level that you think will die too quickly, consider using a debuff, a low-potency spell such as Flying Sardine.png  Flying Sardine, or your auto-attack to tag it.
  • The enemy must successfully use the spell at least once during the battle. - You need to make sure the cast bar finishes and is not interrupted. In the case of instant-cast spells (such as Goblin Punch.png  Goblin Punch), look for the spell's name in the flying numbers that indicate damage or healing done.
    • This may sometimes require setup to make the enemy cast the spell. For example: Exuviation.png  Exuviation (damage the enemy's ally so it will heal them), Cold Fog.png  Cold Fog (intentionally fail a boss mechanic).
    • Despite what the job quests might imply, you do not need to get hit by the spell to learn it.
    • A spell being cast multiple times in a fight does not seem to affect the chances of learning it.
  • You must be alive as the enemy dies. - If you die before the enemy does, you will not learn the spell. For example, if you are killed by an enemy that used Self-destruct.png  Self-destruct or Final Sting.png  Final Sting, you will fail to learn the spell.

The learn chance system works as follows:

  • Spell chances in the open world, The Masked Carnivale Masked Carnivale, or unsynced instances are RNG, with the chance based on the number of stars for that spell. More stars means a lower learn chance - it is estimated that 1-star spells have a 50% chance, while 5-star spells have a 5% chance.[1].
  • Doing an instance synced, whether solo or with a party, makes the spell have a 100% learn rate (excluding the Masked Carnival, which does not guarantee learning).
  • Certain spells required for low-level job quests (such as Mind Blast.png  Mind Blast) are a special exception, as they have a 100% learn chance regardless of syncing.

Additional notes:

  • Spells acquired by Whalaqee Totem are obtained from Wayward Gaheel Ja in Ul'dah - Steps of Thal (X:12.5 Y:12.9). He is near the Blue Mage trainer. You will not be notified when a new totem is unlocked, so you'll need to speak with him to check.
  • All Blue Mage spells can be used at Level 1.

Notes for the table below:

  • Min Lv indicates the minimum level that the spell can be attained. Masked Carnivale, FATE, or Elite Mark sources are not taken into consideration.
  • World Mob L takes only the level of Open World, FATE and Elite Mark mobs into consideration while Duty L takes only Dungeons, Trials, Raids and the Masked Carnivale into account.
  • A ~ means there is no relevant information (such as there being no open world mob with the spell).
  • Methods in small text under "How to Acquire" denote they are not recommended methods, and are present merely for completeness.
